Norman Strength and Conditioning Services for Women
NMotion Sports and Human Performance understands the female athlete and how menstrual cycles and female hormones impact training, musculoskeletal systems, injury risk, and performance. We can show you how to let your cycle work to your advantage and make sure you’re getting the proper nutrients for your unique physiology and the demands of your particular sport or activity.
Understanding the Fluctuations of Female Hormones
Hormones affect the entire neuromusculoskeletal system, and female hormones can influence sports performance and sports-related injuries. While hormones are relatively stable in males, there are distinct monthly fluctuations of hormones during the menstrual cycle, as well as changes in hormone concentration during the female life stages of pre-puberty, puberty, childbearing, and menopause.
Hormonal imbalance can easily happen with the increased demands of physical activity and can lead to irregular or missed menstrual cycles, heavy bleeding, PMS, infertility, acne, body weight fluctuation, and difficulty putting on muscle. Hormonal contraception can also hinder performance in various ways, but with our Norman sports medicine treatments, you can stop worrying about having your period during your next big event and continue to achieve personal bests well into your menopausal years.
Treating RED-S in Athletes
A common condition we treat with female athletes is Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). This occurs when the body is not taking in enough energy to meet the demands placed on it by the amount of exercise being performed. Although this can also occur in male athletes, it tends to be more prominent in females.
RED-S can cause impairments in heart health, bone health, mental health, gut health, metabolism, energy, immunity, growth, and development, thereby increasing the chance of recurrent infections, overtraining, underperformance, chronic fatigue, and injury risk. Fortunately, most of the symptoms of RED-S are reversible when treated early. Guidance from our experienced medical team can lead to improvements in overall health.
Female athletes do not have to surrender an active lifestyle once becoming a mom. In fact, exercise during pregnancy can actually enhance the health of both mother and baby-to-be. However, there are some important factors to be aware of while training through pregnancy, such as metabolic changes, caloric and nutrient demands, joint laxity, and body load changes.
Breastfeeding also offers many benefits for both mother and baby after birth. While breastfeeding necessitates a higher caloric demand and added stress on the body, it is possible to maintain milk supply while getting back to exercise, training, and competition.
Timing for return to sport depends on delivery, recovery, any complications, and personal stress levels. Pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary incontinence, diastasis recti, hormonal/nutritional imbalances, and chronic pelvic pain are common in women after delivery. These conditions should be treated within the first three months to avoid further complication. Our Norman sports medicine providers can help you transition back to your sport without compromising your health.
After an initial evaluation, a treatment plan will be developed based on your specific concerns, conditions, and goals. Our physicians will work alongside your PCP and/or OB/GYN to provide the highest level of care for your specific needs.
